Joseph D. SAYERS is selling his residence.
DIED -- Col. F. W. ADAMS on Sun. night in Brenham, a prominent member of Brenham bar.
Deceased was from Mississippi, commanded a Confederate regiment, was a Mason, an Odd
Fellow, and member of the Baptist Church.

The trotting match in Austin last Sat. between Mr. SHERMAN's brown mare and Mr. COE's bay
horse Dan, for $1,000 a side, was easily won by the horse.
DIED -- Magrecio BALLIS, a Spaniard, was murdered by two colored men, James VENABLE
and Georgs LEWIS, in Austin on the Sat. last. A pick axe and rocks were the murder
weapons; body found near the river. (Dated 20 March 1871.)
J. JUNG, Sheriff BC, will organize the militia of BC.
The Donation Certificate No. 386 for 640 acres of land issued by the Adjutant of the State of
Texas to Thomas A. GRAVES (dec'd) for his participation in the battle of San Jacinto has
been lost. If not heard from within time prescribed by law, I shall apply for a duplicate.

DIED -- Dempsey NASH, son of Capt. John D. NASH of this county. He died at his father's
residence on Thurs. night of last week.

DIED -- Esq. LAWHORN of Young's Settlement reports that on Sun. evening last, Mr. W. P.
MAY was found dead in the road, 3 mi. north east of that place. Leaves wife and babe,
two years old. Murder or suicide not known.

Since Hancock, aided by his local allies, the lynchers and school-house burners, has been here agitating the different neighborhoods of the county, the condition of affairs is simply desperate. The existence of armed hands in disguise, prowling the country at night, burning school-houses, whipping school teachers, and beating colored men who patronize schools is no longer a myth, but an absolute fact, sustained by the most irrefragable testimony. The terrorism that these desperadoes and assassins exercise, is not confined to the colored man; but the German inhabitants especially those of Serbin, in this county are continually intimidated and outraged by these cowardly and infamous scoundrels.
The offence which the victims of this violence has committed is there devotion to good government, their love of law and order. Besides Mr. Hama, a teacher of a colored school who was taken out sometime ago and almost whipped to death, on account of his vocation several other have shared like treatment for sending to such schools and for voting with the Republican party. How long, I would like to know, shall such villains thus abuse the magnanimity of the Government. The seat and center of these outrageous demonstrations can be readily ascertained, and it is such a place that should be searched out. Martial law is terrible; but until certain bloated and pampered, aristocrats here, who encourage and supply these gentleman "Knights" are treated as the poor freedman and unoffending Germans have endured there will be no peace in this country, to say nothing of a free Republican vote in the coming election.
I feel too indignant to enter into details; the whole matter is simply awful for a good man to contemplete, and if the thing does not stop we want General Davidson here. Yours, & c., "Observer".
In regard to the threats of the Journal, we hurl them in its teeth with the contemptathey deserve, and will say to him that it is our firm and conscientious belief and conviction that the "masked villains" he speak of are from Davis & Co, own clan. As we have heretofore stated, the Democracy of Bastrop County - those men who are advocating Democratic principles and the election of Hon. John Hancock to Congress, are men of honor and principle - they are men of property of influence of high social position and the bona fide tax payers of the county. The money that goes.....

Grand Jury Room, August 1st, 1871
Hon. J. B. McFarland, Judge of the District Court holding session in the town of Bastrop for Bastrop County:
We the undersigned, chosen and acting as a Grand Jury for this term of the Court, would beg leave to say to your Honor, that under the charge and instructions given us by your Honor, to diligently inquire into and present all offences coming before us and occurring within the limits of our county, that we have had under consideration all and every report for crime and lawlessness of every grade and character, and that we find much for which we have good cause to present and have presented to the Court; but much we are glad to say has been represented to us for which no proof or evidence has come before this Grand Jury to justify the finding of bills of indictments against the parties charged.
We have examined over two hundred witnesses, and have endeavored to bring to light all and every disturbance, especially that in regard to what is called Ku Klux.
We further state that no evidence has come before this Grand Jury to justify us in believing that such a band or party of men do exist within the limits of our county; though we have evidence that several persons banded together have committed acts of lawlessness and crime, but at no time did they represent themselves as being Ku Klux. Your Grand Jury do not know what a Ku Klux is, or what it takes to make one, neither of us ever having seen one, and no description plain enough has been given us for us to say who or what they are. Bands of men or boys - but most of the evidence show to be boys - is disguise, have been seen on two or three occasions riding in the Eastern part of our county, but no disturbances have been committed by them - no one injured or harmed in any way, and what they do seems to have been done more for sport than injury to any one.
Our county presents, so far as we are able to judge, as peaceable a condition as before the war. All seem to show a willingness to abide by the laws, and at no time has there been shown a greater desire to have the laws executed. The guilty may not be willing to meet the judgement due their crime, but those are few, very few to the number who abide by the laws.
We regret very much to hear that upon us rests the responsibility, and upon our action depends whether or not martial law shall be declared in our county. To this we have to say we have acted and our acts are before the proper tribunal, and for ourselves our consciences are clear, and however others may think, we have endeavored to do our duty. If a perfect consciousness of duty done will not relieve our citizens of the burden of martial law we suppose they will have to suffer by it. They have suffered enough - more will be hard to bear.
This much, your Honor, we feel to be our duty to state to you and thanking you for the kindness and courtesy shown us by our Honor, and hoping that nothing herein contained may work injury, but do the good intended, we are Respectfully, John P. Jones, Foreman, J.

Letter to the Ed. from Ev BURLESON re: his name appearing in the Austin State Journal on 25
July as having been arrested by the State Police of BC. BURLESON says he has never
been arrested by the State Police and is guilty of no misdemeanors.
[It was brought to the attention of reconstructionist Gov. Edmond DAVIS that a number of violent acts against Blacks were being committed in Bastrop County. The Governor threatened imposing martial law in BC, and directed J. B. McFARLAND, Judge DCBC, to convene
a Grand Jury to ascertain if the Ku Klux Klan were committing these crimes. Much of the
newspaper of this date and of 12 Aug concerned this issue. Some of the articles of both
dates are summarized below.]
1) Letter to the Ed. re: Hon. John HANCOCK and violence surrounding the colored
schools. Mr. HAMS [HAMA?], teacher in the colored school, mentioned.
2) The Grand Jury, consisting of John P. JONES - Foreman, Col. John A. LAWRENCE,
D. C. [P. C.?] HENDRICKS, C. KLEINERT, Capt. John D. NASH, Frank F. JONES,
C. G. [C. C.?] CALDWELL, Jerry Cooksey (colored), Geo. W. EBLIN (born in BC),
Wm. A. J. JENKINS, Dan M. JACKSON, Robert P. JONES (leading member of the
Methodist Church), Robt. J. PRICE, J. NEGGERETH, and Charles CHAMBERS
(colored), reported to Judge McFARLAND that it found no evidence that the Ku Klux Klan
exists in the county. Esq. LAWHORN mentioned. Marion HARRISON testified before
the Grand Jury.
[Apparently the Austin State Journal denounced the Grand Jury's decision, and Gov.
DAVIS continued to threaten martial law. These prompted more editorials, defense of BC,
and return denouncements from the Bastrop Advertiser. The articles are summarized
below, from the Bastrop Advertiser's point of view.]

Morgan C. HAMILTON, at the Austin Republican Convention on the 23d ult., declared he would
not pay the enormous and illegal taxes assessed on his property.
Letter to the Ed. from W. A. HIGHSMITH detailing specific state and county tax rates.
Letter to the Ed. from W. H. CLIVE, Bastrop. Nat MOORE captured CLIVE and labelled
CLIVE "a notorious murderer." CLIVE reports that he was acquitted by a Grand Jury of
all blame, and denounces MOORE.
Mrs. M. J. MILLICAN is selling 764 acres of Post Oak land lying near Oak Hill Academy,
8 miles north east of Bastrop.
A mule and horse were stolen from Wm. A. YOUNG, 4 miles south west of Bastrop, on Tues.
night, 25 July 1871 [desc. follows]. $50 reward.
J. F. BAKER is selling his homestead (125 acres, 2 residences, farm animals, tools, household
furniture) and another 164 acres adjoining with stock and tools.
Capt. Lewis C. WISE left for Virginia on Thurs. last, but will return to teach in the Fall.
Strayed or stolen -- from the farm of Fridrick GRUSSENDORF in Pin Oak Settlement, one Bay
Horse [desc. follows]. Reward.
Jessee BILLINGSLEY, Administrator of the estate of Felix W. GOFF, dec'd, will apply to
the DCBC in July Term 1871, to sell 1,107 acres, the Headright of GOFF, lying in Trinity
County, described in Patent by the State to him. Another 480 acres in same county, granted
also by patent to GOFF. (Notice dated 17 Jul 1871).
W. H. DIXON is selling his farm on Gravelly Creek, 10 miles east of Bastrop, and 7 miles west
of Airline Railroad, 200 acres of Post Oak land, dwelling, and out houses.

Austin Reformer published an editorial referring to a BC Camp Meeting, the Revs. David
COULSON, G. W. HONEY, and "ruffians & desperadoes of Bastrop County."
COULSON gives a different story. The Editor will investigate.
Mrs. Sarah J. ORGAIN will commence her school, Colorado Institute, for its 13th session, on
Mon. the 4th of Sept. in the Masonic Hall.

DIED -- In Hemphill's Prairie, Monday 26th ult., Mrs. Elizabeth HEMPHILL, late widow of
Cornelius HEMPHILL, aged 53 years.
DIED -- In Webberville, Travis Co., Thursday, 22 May 1773 [sic, but likely a typo for 1873],
W. A. HEMPHILL. Mr. HEMPHILL was some 50-odd years old and one of the old
citizens of Texas. Has lived in BC for a great number of years.
DIED -- On the morning of the 10th ult. in Bastrop, Mary A., infant daughter of Capt. B. D. and
Mrs. Drew ORGAIN.

John PRINN, a colored boy, age 10 or 12, was jailed on the charge of stealing a horse.
DIED -- W. F. WATTERSON, on the night of 21 May 1873, at the early age of 24. A resolution
honoring WATTERSON approved by the Red Rock Lodge, No. 310, F. A. M., and signed
by J. W. EASTLAND, and S. D. PETTY, Geo. AWALT, was presented to
WATTERSON's father.

George COLLETTSO, President of the Bastrop Coal Co., fined $5 for refusing to pay a hack hire
while in Galveston.
DIED -- [Paper torn and faded, words missing], near Bastrop, Mrs. Emily F. JONES, wife of
[words missing], eldest daughter of [words missing] MAYES, deceased. She leaves six
orphan children, 3 boys and 3 girls, and a deeply devoted husband.
Mr. and Mrs. STODDARD (H. S. and C. B.) will return from the North about the first of Sept.
next and will open a private school in Bastrop.
Maj. Jos. D. SAYERS will speak at the closing exercises of Excelsior College on 25th and 26th
inst.
Dr. A. M. [A. W.?] HILL, having returned from Louisiana, has decided to permanently locate
in HILL's Prairie and offers his services as physician and surgeon.
Former BC Sheriff I. N. BAKER is moving his family to San Antonio.

From Precinct No. 2, SHERRILL was jailed in default of $250 bond, on a charge of theft from
a house.
Before Justice LAWHON, FERGURSON, the section boss of the Central Railroad, was bound
over in $100 to appear before the DC to answer a charge of false imprisonment.

Col. Lytt W. MOORE of LaGrange delivered the annual literary ovation of the Waco University
Exercises on Thurs. last.
NICHOLS brought us 3 beets, one weighing 5 lbs.
DIED -- Robert PARKS of LaGrange, young son of J. D. PARKS, of hydrophobia. Had been
bitten 5 weeks previously on the hand by a dog.
A bill was passed by the recent legislature incorporating the town of McDade and the following

The first meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Excelsior College was held in Bastrop on
Thursday 26th June 1873. Board members: G. W. JONES, C. B. GARWOOD, President,
D. W. JONES, A. J. BATTS, J. P. FOWLER, Sec'y, H. H. STARKIE, C. ERHARD,
and C. TAYLOR.
DIED -- John J. SMITH, an old and respected citizen of this county, at his residence Thursday
evening.
It was first thought that a white man, stranger and newcomer to the county, brutally murdered a
negro on Judge EASTLAND's farm across the river in the early part of the week. But he
was overtaken and proved his innocence beyond doubt. Murderer now unknown.
Excelsior Examinations on Wed. last opened with a prayer from Rev. J. T. WILLIAMSON. The
following speeches were given and compositions read by the students: "Sacred Literature"
by Master Don PETTY; "Visions and Realities" by Miss Annie DUVAL; "Will It Pay" by

T. and Mrs. Ella McDONALD.
The Episcopal Sunday School Picnic will be held today. Rev. Mr. PHILLIPS will address the

The citizens of Hemphill's Prairie gave a neighborhood barbecue near Capt. NASH's yesterday.
The Trustees of the Excelsior College offered positions as Co-Principal to Prof. MORRISON and
Miss McCAY.
The cotton worm has appeared on James W. YOUNG's farm across the river. Mr. GREEN is
trying the "Whisenant Worm Destroyer."
R. F. CAMPBELL, Registrar of Voters of BC, published a notice on voter registration
requirements.

M. W. CUNEY elected President of the Negro convention held at Brenham last week.
Nat C. REIVES, Esq., former Editor of the LaGrange New Era, is an independent candidate for
Sheriff of Fayette County.
DIED -- A Mr. VOSBURG in Austin on Monday last. He had been eating figs and cake with a
friend. Mr. V. died at one o'clock that night at home, it is supposed from strychnine
poison.
DEATHS -- Two suicides and one accidental shooting in Fayette County during the past week.
A son of Mr. RADGEN, aged 10 years, hung himself; a Mr. TENBER shot himself beside
his wife's grave, killing himself instantly; and a Mr. BURRHAM accidentally shot himself
by blowing off the top of his head.

Dr. C. ERHARD, Trustee, announces that Mrs. Mollie McDOWELL has accepted the musical
department of the Excelsior College for the next term.
Mr. A. J. BATTS has peach trees filled with peaches.
Nelson JOHNSON, the notorious desperado negro of Bastrop County, who broke jail in Bastrop
some five months ago, has been seen in the county during the past week. The officers are
after him.
Oscar ELLISON, one of the negroes who broke jail some time since, was arrested near Columbus
and brought to Bastrop by City Marshall GRIMES last week and lodged in jail. He was
sentenced to the penitentiary at the Nov. term of the DCBC for 7 years, but appealed to the
Supreme Court which reduced it to one year. He is now waiting to receive his sentence
from the Judge when he will take up quarters at Huntsville.
GARWOOD presented us on Thurs. last with an apple raised on a farm in Hill's Prairie weighing
14 oz. and measuring 13 inches in circumference.

Letter to the Ed. signed by several people in Butler County, Alabama recommending a young man
named E. J. THOMPSON to the people of Bastrop county. THOMPSON emigrated from
Alabama to Texas last year, and is now living at Mr. A. W. HILL's in Bastrop County.
His parents lived in Butler County and were a respectable and worthy family. They died
when he was very young. He lost his right arm in the Confederate army, before he was
sixteen years old. He is an industrious man and perfect gentleman in every respect.

DIED -- A young man named RODEN was thrown from his horse and killed in Williamson
County last week.
Maude IRELAND of Seguin and Sallah PORTER of Austin were two young ladies receiving
certificates of distinction at the Augusta Female Seminary at Staunton, VA.
DIED -- A man named WARD of Colorado County shot and killed a negro named FIELD with
whom he had a difficulty.
DIED -- Henry CROCHERON, an old and highly esteemed citizen of Bastrop, at his residence
Wed. night about 12 o'clock. Mr. CROCHERON, if we remember correctly, came to
Bastrop in 1837. Previous to the war and for several years afterwards, he engaged in the
mercantile business. He was 67 years old and leaves a widow.
The first bale of new cotton was brought to town on Wed. last. It was raised on the J. C.
HIGGINS farm, 4 miles west of Bastrop, ginned at the FITZWILLIAMS gin, and
weighed 453 pounds. It was bought be Col. J. C. HIGGINS at 14 cents, and shipped to
Galveston. The cotton was raised by Al TRIGG, colored.

DIED -- A Mr. WALKER, living on Piney, Thurs. last, and was buried in the city cemetery on
Friday evening. He had been a resident of this county some two years, and worked last
year for Mr. K. H. BARBEE.
Our friend Capt. John M. CLAIBORNE and lady of Galveston are visiting here to escape the
yellow fever scare.
J. P. FOWLER, Esq., reports that a man was struck and killed by a train near Serbin.
Col. J. C. HIGGINS accompanied his two daughters on Thursday last to Columbia, TN where the
daughters will attend college. He has already a son attending Sewanee, TN.
Master Albert ERHARD, who has been assisting his father in the drug store, left us on Thurs. last
for New York to enter the College of Pharmacy there. He will remain in the college for
18 months.
Mayor MILLER reports that there is a poor woman, Mrs. MEEK, helplessly sick and in reduced
circumstances, living in the Dr. RAWLS old house on Pine Street, brought to town and left
there by some one living in the county. Has a daughter about 6 years old. Mr. MILLER

DIED -- Mr. FLETCHER killed in Elgin last week by Mr. CALHOUN. The jury of inquest
ruled it a justifiable killing as FLETCHER was pursuing CALHOUN with a knife.

DIED -- Lee L. RECTOR, of Calvert, from yellow fever.
DIED -- Mr. C. FINK, brother-in-law of our townsman Mr. L. EILERS, in La Grange last week. He was among the oldest citizens of La Grange, having lived there upwards of 35 years.
Mr. C. W. YOUNG of Washington County said that when he was near the 14 mile post on his
way from Winchester to Bastrop, he was attacked by a negro with a six shooter. It is
thought the negro is the notorious Nelson JOHNSON, who has escaped from the Bastrop
jail.

The BRYCE and LYMAN place, 6 miles north of Bastrop on the McDade Road, containing about
250 acres with suitable tenement houses, is for rent. Apply to Stephen BISHOP on

DIED -- Gail BORDEN in Columbus, for many years a resident of BC. Remains sent to Houston
from Bordenville, Colorado County, escorted by son H. Lee BORDEN. Probably will be
buried in Harlem, NY.
DIED -- Lt. Charles L. HUDSON of the 4th Cavalry, on Sunday 5th inst., accidental discharge
of his rifle. His remains brought to San Antonio.
Service tomorrow at the M. E. Church, Rev. ALLEN officiating.
DIED -- Mrs. George EBLIN, at her husband's residence on Alum Creek last week. She was the
sister of Robert H. GUILLIAMS.
DIED -- Mrs. Anna Mary SCHNEIDER, wife of Mr. Gus SCHNEIDER of Hemphill's Prairie,
of disease of the heart last Monday. Buried in city cemetery on Tuesday. She leaves a
husband and four children, the youngest but 2 months old.
DIED -- Oliver H. P. COLE, former resident of BC, while returning from Austin to his residence
near Mountain City, Hays County. Runaway buggy accident. Leaves a wife and several
children. Reported by W. L. FRANK of Mountain City.

Big fight at Red Rock on Tuesday last. John KOHLER, Sheriff, and deputies N. A. MORRIS
and Louis DABNEY rushed to the scene. A stranger in the community from Corsicana
named JOHNSON took possession of a house, was shot by the posse, and taken to Bastrop
for medical treatment by Dr. W. B. DARDEN. JOHNSON has a wife and a five month
old child.
Yesterday two strange white men, Tom HARRIS and Frank FRANKS, claiming to have families
in Goliad County, came to Bastrop. Had with them a negro named Henry. They sold a
horse to Mr. Jas. GLASS. The two got drunk then at the river drew pistols on Bill
WILLIAMS, Aleck WHITE - colored, and Jas. GLASS. They shot a negro, name
unknown. A negro posse pursued the three, captured them, and brought them to Bastrop.
The negro Henry is badly wounded.
DIED -- J. Hunter BELL was killed at McDade late yesterday evening by young John
LAWRENCE.

DIED -- Mrs. SCAGGS was horribly burned to death near Webberville last week when her clothes
caught fire. Leaves a husband and a five week old infant.
The jury summoned by B. LYMAN, Mayor of McDade, finds that J. Hunter BELL came to his
death by pistol shots at the hand of Jno. LAWRENCE, 23 Jan 1874. LAWRENCE was
arrested and turned over to Town Marshall NASH, but in the night LAWRENCE escaped.

survive. A woman was the cause of the tragedy.

a daughter of Eli MERCER of Amite County, Mississippi and moved to Texas in 1830.

JOHNSON who was shot at Red Rock while resisting arrest is now out of danger and has been
moved to the county jail. The case of State vs. JOHNSON was continued by Esq.
YOUNG.
Charles WERTZNER President, Board of School Directors, published a scholastic census of BC's
nine school districts.
Bastrop Debating Society officers elected on 6th inst. Meeting on 13th: "Was the Anglo Saxon
race justifiable in dispossessing the Indians of this Continent?" Affirmative: GREEN and
MOORE. Negative: Dr. EARLY, ORGAIN, RUSSELL, MACKENNA. Negative
